Interview: Homestarrunner  2005-2-10
Who are the Brothers Chaps? (is my grammar right?)

Interview by Gerhard Human (I was wearing my Homestar T-shirt)

Since discovering Strongbad and the Homestar runner gang online my life has changed. I, like many others, have become an addict feeding of the hillarious animations done by the Brothers Chaps.

If none of this makes any sense first visit www.homestarrunner.com.

We have been lucky enough to get the creators of this cult to answer a couple of questions.

1) Who are the Brothers Chaps and how did you get into doing Homestarrunner?

Matt: The Brothers Chaps are composed of my brother Mike Chapman (31) and myself, Matt Chapman (28).

Mike: Homestar Runner started out as a fake children''s book I made in 1996 with my friend Craig Zobel. It was never published or anything, just given out to friends.

Matt: Then in late 1999, we started learning Flash and decided to use the characters from the children''s book for a cartoon. Then we just kept going.

2) Do you have day jobs or are you making a living of the site?

Mike: We used to have day jobs. I did freelance flash and graphic design and Matt did graphic design for an internet company.

Matt: Until about 2 and a half years ago, the site was just a spare time affair.

Mike: Before we knew it, we were selling enough T-shirts to quit our day jobs and work on the site full time.

Matt: So that''s still how we support ourselves and the site, from merchandise sales through our online store. No banner ads necessary.

3) How about TV, have you been asked to do a show for TV? Is it something you would like to do?

Mike: We''ve talked to some TV type people before but we like doing Homestar on the web. It''s much more immediate. Most of the cartoons on the site are conceived and created only a couple of days before we upload them. Sometimes less.

Matt: A TV show would be cool, just not a Homestar show. We''d come up with something better suited to TV if we were offered the chance.

4) Will Strong Bad ever take his boxing gloves off?

Mike: Only if someone cuts his arms off.

Matt: Ewww, gross.

5) What is your inspiration? What is your top 4 favourite movies or shows?

Mike: The 60''s Batman TV show starring Adam West
Matt: Raising Arizona (the movie)
Mike: Old Nintendo Games
Matt: A Charlie Brown Christmas
